The primary maintenance facility at Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI) encompasses 5,000 square feet on two levels and houses over 60 batch coaters, three continuous platforms and a myriad of sophisticated testing and support systems.
However, the facility's storage capabilities were far from sophisticated. A maze of open shelving created a situation where the wide array of parts, from electrical components, nuts, bolts and bearings to various types of tools, were not easy to find or access. Also, being in a potential earthquake zone, the open shelving was potentially a great safety hazard.
To top off OCLI's problems, workbenches in the space were ergonomically deficient, lacking in functionality and difficult to keep organized. What's more, they were not uniform in appearance and, thus, aesthetically unattractive.

The total workspace solution provided by Lista included 15 workbenches and 11 standard width cabinets arranged in a variety of configurations. The functionality of the workbenches, with their large working area and ESD protective worksurfaces, has made OCLI technicians more organized and productive. The workbenches have also contributed to a huge improvement in the plant's overall appearance.

The cabinets have completely addressed all of OCLI's storage problems. One row of cabinets stores faster-moving items, such as electrical components, nuts, bolts, bearings, fuses and eye loops. Drawers are outfitted with Lista's partitions and accessories, allowing OCLI to create custom compartments, augmenting the drawers' flexibility and ease of parts identification. The second row of drawers holds tools and other equipment utilized for machine maintenance. Cabinets with deeper drawers are ideal for storing expensive test equipment safely and securely.
Overall, OCLI has realized a 30% gain in floor space due to the Lista storage solution, as well as enhanced aesthetics and hugely improved efficiency. In fact, OCLI expects the entire Lista system to pay for itself, in increased productivity, in three to five years.
