Material transfer and conveyor solutions: standard features

Material transfer workstations, sometimes known as ball transfer workstations, may utilize fixed or pop up balls, pop up pads, roller inserts, or insert wheels embedded in a worksurface to aid in the ergonomic handling or transfer of a work product. They can be used on a stand-alone workstation, on adjacent workstations when product is transferred between them, or between workstations and transport carts.

Generally less expensive and more task-specific than conveyors, material transfer worksurfaces are typically designed around the products that will be built or manipulated on the workstation.

Considerations when designing a material transfer worksurface for your application include:

• The size and weight of the product
• If it is moved on a pallet or tray
• If it needs to be rotated while on the workstation
• How the object is to be delivered to and removed from the workstation
• Where on the worksurface the product will be worked on
• The material that will be in contact with the worksurface, i.e., product itself or the pallet/tray it rides on
• Direction of transfer, and the direction of travel
