High-Density Storage | Lista Intl

How High Density Storage Can Improve Manufacturing Efficiency
Workspace storage systems company Lista is turning the old adage, "Do as I say, not as I do" on its head when it comes to manufacturing products at its Holliston, MA facility.
Lista Intl
Company:

Lista

Problem:

In today's competitive environment, nimble manufacturers focus on continuous improvement, recognizing that, no matter where you are in the manufacturing cycle, work stations must perform functions and they can always be performed better.

Objective:

Regardless of any efficiency improvements that may have gone on in the past, there is always room to go back and update processes to streamline them further. The goal is to have everything needed while working just a half-step away.

Solution:

While its main assembly line has been efficiently laid out to handle 80 percent of the company's product line, Lista establishes model manufacturing cells to evaluate the most efficient ways to assemble unique cabinets or workbenches.

Benefits:

As Lista has grown, it has added to its manufacturing space, but growth and expansion within the facility requires continually seeking out areas that can be made more efficient. Using vertical storage or a storage cabinet that is only as big as needed greatly improves efficiency. Like squeezing a sponge to wring out every drop of water (or space), we are storing tools and materials more densely, and moving cabinets in and out on casters, so when they are not being used they can be stored underneath the workbench.

Company:

Titan USA, West Springfield, MA. Industrial distributor of premium quality, American-made cutting tools.

Problem:

Thanks to steady growth, the company ran out of storage space at its main distribution center. Titan’s huge volume of inventory had dramatically cut into their space. The company's old storage units – comprised entirely of open metal industrial shelving – were no longer an efficient solution.

Objective:

Although expansion was an option, it was an expensive option that Titan USA president and CEO, Ralph Colby, preferred to avoid. Colby was already familiar with Lista storage solutions, having seen them at many of his customers' locations.

"The Lista cabinets appeared to be very durable, and the customers are convinced that their units will last forever."

– Ralph Colby, President and CEO

Solution:

Titan ordered 140 Lista storage cabinets. The majority of these were HS width cabinets, but Titan also purchased some mid-width cabinets fitted with butcher block countertops.

Titan USA greatly appreciates the rugged durability and remarkable capacity of their Lista cabinets. Built with heavy-gauge steel, the HS and mid-width cabinets can withstand the most extreme work environments. Plus, they have 50% more storage capacity than conventional shelving – an attribute that directly addressed Titan's immediate problem.

Benefits:

Titan reaped ergonomic benefits as well as space savings. With each HS drawer providing an 18" depth of usable space, accessing large, heavy cutting tools is never stressful. Titan's cutting tools are also quite valuable, and Colby says that the way the Lista cabinets protect his company's products is the most attractive benefit of all.

"Our products now stay dust-free in the drawers, not subject to potential dirt or damage as they were in the open shelving. Our inventory always stays neat and clean waiting for shipment."

– Ralph Colby

Schmersal, Elmsford, NY. Leading distributor of industrial safety products and switches.

Problem:

Schmersal had outgrown its warehouse space and needed a new distribution center that would afford ample room for present and future storage.

Objective:

Schmersal wanted to improve organization and optimize space when they moved to their new warehouse.

Solution:

Lista's shallow depth Storage Wall® system proved an ideal solution for Schmersal's needs.

By replacing their industrial shelving with five rows of Storage Wall® sections, Schmersal was able to save 40% of their warehouse space. Within the modular Storage Wall® drawers, Schmersal stores electronic components and accessories of disparate size and shape, such as interlock switches, connectors, conduit adapters, turnbuckles, etc. They are able to organize their storage according to product family, which greatly enhances inventory control and reduces order picking time.

To complete their system, Schmersal also purchased eight Lista industrial workbenches. Arranged as individual workstations, and as an on-line order staging area, these workbenches serve multiple functions – from receiving and packaging to final inspection stations.

Benefits:

Schmersal is enjoying a range of benefits from the complete Lista system, including improved organization, productivity and aesthetics. But overall, the most notable benefit has been the space gain in the warehouse.

"The Lista system delivered an overall space-savings that will accommodate 25% growth over the next several years. You just can't get that from conventional industrial shelving."

– Bruce Eylmann, Operations Manager

Corporate Jet Support Case Study | Lista Intl

At Corporate Jet Support, the ceiling’s the limit for storage thanks to Lista cabinets
Corporate Jet Support had enough storage space but were not using it efficiently. See how Lista HS cabinets and Storage Wall systems helped make item retrieval easier and improved efficiency in the facility.

Company:

Corporate Jet Support, Moonachie, NJ. Wholesaler of high-quality airplane parts.

Problem:

“We ran out of room. We had grown out of our existing storage space and were forced to contemplate either moving or expanding our warehouse through expensive construction.”

– Chris Breitweiser, Owner

The problem, as it turned out, was not one of insufficient storage space ─ the available 10,000 square feet was fine. But  CJS’s antiquated, conventional shelving and pallets were not making the best use of the available space.

Objective:

Replace low-density storage with a modular storage system that could take full advantage of CJS’s available underutilized vertical space, while providing secure, dust-free, organized and highly flexible storage for the company’s entire inventory.

Solution:

CJS purchased a full squadron of 250 HS cabinets, plus two Storage Wall® systems from Lista. The high density 22.5” deep HS Cabinets are designed to make item retrieval easier and reduce reach and strain, with drawers that extend completely from the housing to allow easy access to all the contents. The HS cabinets’ 18” deep drawers require only 36” of aisle space for full drawer extension, so aisle space can be minimized.

“We were able to maximize our warehouse height and maintain the flexibility to put thousands of items in a very limited area. We can now hold in one drawer what we previously were storing in three units of conventional shelving. We now have 35,000 different locations in which to store inventory. With our old method, we were only able to store one third of that amount.”

– Chris Breitweiser

Breitweiser particularly likes that the HS cabinets come with a built-in highly secure locking system.

“We deal in used aircraft parts for planes that are no longer being made, so many of the parts are difficult to find and very valuable. It’s important to keep a close watch on inventory and to maintain a worry-free security system.”

– Chris Breitweiser

CJS captured 10 feet of vertical space by stacking two HS cabinets atop each other. Lista custom-configured the HS drawer interiors using its flexible, modular dividing and partitioning accessories to accommodate the items CJS would be storing ─ everything from small washers to valves, generators and actuators.

Benefits:

“All the units we purchased from Lista are rock solid and very easy to keep well organized. With the combination of the different sizes of Lista cabinets, CJS is now able to segregate different types of inventory, while maintaining plenty of room for growth in an area that we thought we had outgrown. I am extremely pleased with the benefits we’ve gained after switching to the Lista storage system ─ benefits of superior organization, inventory control and fast retrieval that have made us a lot more productive. They are a great company, and they make a strong, durable heavy-gauge steel product. It’s a relief knowing that, with proper care, our Lista storage system can truly last forever.”

– Chris Breitweiser
